licensed premises in Aldershot has failed a test purchase operation.

Officers from the North and East Operational Command Unit Safer Streets Team carried out the operation in Aldershot and Farnborough on Thursday, June 4.

A 15-year-old boy was used to attempt to buy alcohol at six stores in Aldershot and two in Farnborough.

All but one of the stores asked the boy for identification. However he was not asked to prove his age at Phewa Stores in Victoria Road, Aldershot and was subsequently sold alcohol.

As a result the member of staff who sold the alcohol was issued with a £80 fixed penalty notice and the designated premises supervisor has been interviewed by police and given advice.

PC Iain Barnes, of the North and East OCU Safer Streets team, said: "We are pleased that seven out of the eight premises requested identification from the test subject.

"However it is disappointing that Phewa Stores failed the test purchase operation. We will continue to conduct more of these operations to help combat underage drinking, which can fuel anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and violence.

"It is extremely important that retailers check identification before selling alcohol. If there is any doubt they should follow the ‘Challenge 21' initiative and ask anyone who looks under 21 to provide photo ID to prove they are at least 18 years old."
