Hampshire Constabulary is investigating a public order situation that was reported to police shortly after 10.00pm on Saturday, July 18, 2009.

Officers who arrived at the scene in Chapel Lane, Farnborough found approximately 100 members of the public in the street as a result of a party being held at an address in the area. Approximately 30 people within this crowd were reported to be involved in violent behaviour.

Extra units from Hampshire Constabulary’s Force Support Unit (FSU) were called to assist local Targeted Patrol Team (TPT) officers plus Surrey Police dog handlers and a Surrey Police helicopter.

Officers dispersed the crowd after approximately an hour and a half. Five people were arrested. Four remain in custody for questioning by detectives today (Sunday).

The five arrested are one 17-year-old youth from Farnborough, two 18-year-old men from Farnborough, one 18-year-old man from Aldershot, and one 19-year-old man from Aldershot.

Detective Inspector Steve Cook, who is leading the investigation, said:  “Police from Hampshire and Surrey responded swiftly and effectively with extra officers to prevent a large public order situation from escalating within the community. The violence reported was contained, and there have been no reports of serious injuries or further calls about disorder in the area.

“I would like to thank the community for their support, and all the witnesses who have provided statements to police already. Officers from Farnborough’s Safer Neighbourhoods Teams are continuing to work closely with residents this weekend to gather further evidence, and provide reassurance that this was an isolated incident.

“Our investigation is continuing with suspects being questioned in custody, and I would appeal to anyone with information, who hasn’t come forward yet, to contact police.”
