Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Blackwater on Friday, November 6.
At around 3pm a man knocked on the door of the home of a 97-year-old woman in Meadow Way. The man told the woman that he had accidentally driven into her fence and he took her into the garden to show her the damage.
When they returned to the house she saw a second man in the hallway. Both men then left the property via the front door.
The woman later discovered that her bedroom had been entered and a purse containing £60 had been stolen.
The first man is described as:
-
White
-
Aged in his early 20s
-
Around 5ft 8ins tall
-
Medium build
-
Wearing a dark suit and possibly a tie
The second man is described as:
-
White
-
Aged in his early 50s
-
Slightly shorter than the first man
-
Wearing dark coloured clothing
Detective Constable Andy Grieve, of Aldershot CID, said: “This was a despicable crime where a vulnerable member of the community has been targeted.
“Burglaries like this are cowardly and we want to hear from any witnesses or anyone who has information about these two men.
“This incident happened at a time when local schools were closing for the day and there may have been a number of people in the area.
“Residents are reminded to ensure that they always ask for identification before inviting cold callers into their homes.”
Hampshire Constabulary offers the following advice:
- Stop – are you expecting anyone to call on you? Do you know the person at the door? Don’t be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.
- Check – A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it. Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from, don’t accept a number from the caller.
- Chain – fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.
If you turn anyone away from your home because they could not provide you with a genuine reason for being there, or you are suspicious of callers in your area, contact the police.
