Police have released an e-fit image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with two distraction burglaries in Farnborough on Monday, April 26.
The first incident happened at around 2pm. A man visited an address in Highgate Lane claiming to be there to check a water leak.
The elderly occupant let the man in and then followed him into the kitchen. He looked under the sink and then left. Nothing was stolen.
The second incident happened at around 2.20pm at an address in Scotts Court. This time a man knocked on the door of the address claiming to be there to read the meter.
The elderly woman who lives at the address was suspicious as the meter had been read recently. She left the chain on her door and screamed at the man and he then left.
The man is described as:
- White
- Aged in his mid 20s
- 5ft 8ins to 5ft 9ins tall
- Short fair hair
- Blue or grey eyes
- Clean shaven
- Pale complexion
- Slim build
- Wearing a light coloured or white blue and grey checked short sleeve shirt
- Pleasant and chatty
Detective Constable Sue Champion, of the Aldershot Priority Crime Unit, said: “People who try to commit these crimes are cowardly.
“This man has preyed on two vulnerable members of the community who have been left shaken up following the incidents.
“Fortunately nothing has been stolen and the second victim did exactly the right thing by keeping the door chained and shouting at the man to leave.
“We have released an e-fit image of the man we would like to speak to and would ask anyone who recognises him to contact us as soon as possible.
“We also want to hear from anyone else who has been visited by a suspicious man matching the description.”
Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Homes advice:
- Stop – are you expecting anyone to call on you? Do you know the person at the door? Don’t be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.
- Chain – fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.
- Check – A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it. Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from.
Burglars can make you believe they are genuine callers. Don't invite them in. If in doubt, keep them out!
