Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Department have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a baby’s body in Fleet.
The newborn infant was discovered at around 11.20am this morning, Wednesday, May 26, by a cleaner who was emptying bins near to the southbound platform at Fleet train station.
An ambulance was called but the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was taken to hospital and on examination, the baby was found to have suffered injuries and a murder enquiry has now been launched.
Detectives are working closely with British Transport Police to establish how the baby, a white girl, came to be at the train station and are urgently trying to trace the child’s mother.
Detective Superintendent Jason Hogg, from the Major Crime Department, said: “This is now a murder enquiry and our priority is to trace the baby’s mother.
“She will have recently given birth and is likely to need medical attention herself and I would urge her to go to a hospital or a police station so she can receive the treatment she needs.
“The location where the baby was found is an extremely busy train station platform, and there would have been many people who would have been through this area over the last 24 hours.
“Did you see anything? Did you notice anything suspicious? Do you know anyone who is pregnant who you are now concerned about? If you have any information that can help us, please get in touch.”
