Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary's Major Crime department are continuing to appeal for the mother of a newborn girl to come forward after the child's body was discovered at Fleet Train Station on Wednesday, May 26.
The baby was discovered by a cleaner emptying bins at the front of the station just before 11.30am.
Initial investigations found that the baby had only recently been born and had suffered significant injuries that were not caused during childbirth.
A full post mortem examination is being carried out this afternoon at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London by a specialist Home Office pathologist.
Detective Superintendent Jason Hogg, from the Major Crime department, said: "Our absolute priority remains trying to trace this baby's mother as a matter of urgency. She will have very recently given birth and may need medical attention herself.
"I would appeal directly to her to please go to her nearest hospital or call 999 and ask for an ambulance. We can ensure she receives the help and care she needs.
“If you are a relative or friend of the baby’s mother and are worried about contacting the police, I would like to reassure you that we share your concerns for her well-being. You can contact us in confidence and we will treat her sensitively.
"We are also still trying to trace any witnesses who were at the train station yesterday morning and may have seen someone carrying a bag, or depositing a bag in the bins. We are working with our colleagues at British Transport Police to check CCTV footage and would ask anyone with any information to get in touch."
