Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary's Major Crime department have launched an investigation following an attempted murder in Aldershot on Sunday, December 28.

Around 12.30am, a 21-year-old woman was walking home from a night out in the town when she was assaulted by an unknown man.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Frimley Park Hospital for treatment.

The injured woman has not yet been able to tell police much about the incident, however a range of enquiries are being conducted to establish the exact circumstances of what happened.

Officers believe the woman left a pub in Alexandra Road around midnight and walked through the town and along Redan Hill.

The attack took place in a play park just off Green Way in the North Town area.

Detective Chief Inspector Darren O'Callaghan, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is an extremely serious but thankfully rare attack on a woman walking home from a night out with friends.

"We have a large team of local officers and specialist investigators dedicated to this investigation who are following up a number of lines of enquiry. We also have extra police patrols in the area to reassure the public.

"We urgently need to hear from anyone who may have seen the woman walking home, or has any information about what happened, to contact police in confidence."
