A cycle coding day is being held in Farnborough to encourage members of the community to keep their bikes safe and secure.
The event will take place at Blunden Hall in Blunden Road on Sunday, January 11 between 10am and 2pm. The event has been organised by the Farnborough Safer Neighbourhoods Team.
The aim is to remind bike owners of the number of ways they can avoid becoming a victim of cycle theft.
PC Liz Asplin, of the Farnborough Safer Neighbourhoods team, said: "There are a number of simple steps a person can take to ensure they do not become a victim of this kind of crime.
"Getting a good cycle lock and having your bike marked are two ways to keep your bicycle safe.
"We are holding this event after Christmas so those who received bicycles as gifts have the opportunity to get them marked."
Police have issued the following advice to avoid becoming a victim of this sort of crime:
- Have your bike coded with your postcode and house number. Go along to a bike coding day.
- Lock your bike away at night. If you keep your bike in a shed or garage, think about chaining the bikes together with a good chain and closed shackle lock or a general chain from a cycle shop.
- Install an alarm in the shed or area where the bike is stored that will set off when doors are opened. They can be purchased from hardware and security stores.
- Take a photograph of your bike and take note of the serial number.
If you would like any more information about cycle marking please contact the Safer Neighbourhoods Team at Farnborough police station on 0845 045 45 45.
