Police are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Yateley on Thursday, April 9.
At around 9.40pm two men approached the address of a 91-year-old woman in Fiske Court. They told the elderly woman that they were concerned about the security of her windows and asked if they could come inside.
Once inside they stole four purses containing a small amount of cash, two hearing aids and five charity envelopes containing a total of £5.
Shortly afterwards two men approached a neighbouring property belonging to an 88-year-old woman and gained access the same way. However nothing was stolen.
Officers believe both incidents are linked.
The first man is described as:
- White
- Aged in his late teens
- Around 5ft 4ins tall
- Normal build
- Wearing a dark coloured woolly hat
The second man is described as:
- White
- Aged in his 20s
- 5ft 6ins to 5ft 7ins tall
- Stocky build
- Wearing a dark casual jacket
PC Christopher Hall, of the Yateley Targeted Patrol Team, said: "Burglaries like this are rare in Yateley and we are keen to hear from anyone who has information about the two men responsible.
"These were despicable incidents which were targeted against vulnerable members of the community.
"Residents are reminded to always check the identification of visitors before allowing them into their homes."
Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Homes advice:
- Stop - are you expecting anyone to call on you? Do you know the person at the door? Don't be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.
- Chain - fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.
- Check - A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it. Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from.
Burglars can make you believe they are genuine callers. Don't invite them in. If in doubt, keep them out!
